TEACHING

Teaching Philosophy

I believe it is important that students feel encouraged and supported by their teacher while thinking for themselves and making decisions based on their own beliefs, interests and physical and mental abilities. Part of what makes art magical is that it acts as a portal to someone’s mind, and no two minds are alike. Differences and diversity in concepts and techniques should be celebrated in art. The teacher should act as an aid to the student’s vision but should not impose their thoughts unto their students. It is important for an instructor to thoroughly explain and demonstrate styles and techniques in art while keeping an open mind to the student’s motif and understanding each individual’s specific background and needs. It is necessary for a student to feel like someone is proud of them, and they may not always receive such confirmations at home. A teacher in the arts should prepare their students to consider what art means to them, how they can use it to their benefit, and how it can result in personal growth.
